Welcome to 2011!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to Room 16's blog for 2011 from Papatoetoe South School.  My name is Nick Johnston, I am the classroom teacher.  I am very excited about 2011 and all the great learning that I know will take place.

Our topic for Term 1 is Akonga, our definition for this is, "Knowing yourself as an akonga (a learner) means you think with curiosity about your learning and strive to persist when you meet challenges."  What a great statement to start the year on!!

Some of the routines that you might like to be aware of in Room 16 this year are...

  • Homework will be handed out on a Monday and need to be handed in on Friday morning
  • Spelling words will be written in children's homework books on a Monday and children are expected to learn to spell these words each night to be tested on Friday.  These words will come from spelling lists or mistakes they have made in their own work.
  • Students are expected to read for at least 10-15 minutes each night, they can read journals, picture books, chapter books, comics, or the newspaper.

I look forward to meeting the students in Room 16 this year.  I would love to have parents find time to come in to see their children's learning environment and talk to me about how, through a home-school partnership, we can help the students learn.

I have lots of exciting ideas for the year ahead and I am looking forward to sharing them with you all.
